Local Art Comes to Life on the DPL Podcast

Art Tour Friends Picture 002 CROP 1 scaled
McHenry County by Lars-Birger Sponberg

On this special episode of the Deerfield Public Library Podcast, we have two interviews with local fine artists who have artwork in our community. I talk to Lars-Birger Sponberg, the 98-year-old painter of Midwest landscapes, who’s lived in Deerfield with his wife, Dallas, for over 60 years. Then I talk to sculptor Mary Block, whose 17 foot sculpture, Generations, is in front of Village Hall. We talk about growing up in Deerfield, how her art career began, and some of the ideas behind her work.

These interviews were conducted as part of our research for our Deerfield Public Art Tour. Starting today, you can experience the tour as a self-guided audio tour or virtually, with our 360 video tour. Or, sign up for our next in-person Public Art Tour on Saturday September 9, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Registration opens August 16.

Finally, for our monthly Staff Pick, Multimedia Librarian Ted recommends a biography, Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow.

We hope you enjoy our eighth episode! Each month we’ll be releasing an episode featuring a conversation with a dynamic Deerfield leader (or two!). Learn more about the podcast on our podcast page.
