Some of you may recognize me as the Library Information Specialist at Walden Elementary School, but you probably didn’t know that being a librarian is a second career for me. I used to be an FM radio disc jockey back in the day when classic rock was current! I’ve always loved libraries, however. As a child, I remember sitting at the slanted reading tables in the children’s department and getting an overdue fine for a book I returned. I did as I was taught, to put my things away. I just didn’t understand about checking them in first!
My favorite genres are picture books, historical fiction, realistic fiction, and survival adventure stories. I also enjoy high fantasy, especially The Lord of the Rings. If I’m reading an adult book, you can bet it’s a political thriller.
I am a big fan of authors. I love authors who create great books, regardless of genre. Among them are Dav Pilkey, Jon Scieszka, Susan Cooper, Ursula LeGuin, Kate Messner, and the late, great Amy Krouse Rosenthal.
In 2013, the well-known English author Neil Gaiman spoke on the importance of reading and libraries: “The simplest way to make sure that we raise literate children is to teach them to read, and to show them that reading is a pleasurable activity. And that means, at its simplest, finding books that they enjoy, giving them access to those books, and letting them read them.” Helping young readers find books they will enjoy is my passion and purpose as a librarian, and I would love to help you!
