Author Rosellen Brown on the Podcast – Part 1

On this month’s episode of the Deerfield Public Library Podcast, we are very happy to share a conversation with acclaimed author Rosellen Brown

Rosellen Brown has written some of the most complex, human, and real characters that I’ve read, in novels like Tender Mercies, Civil Wars, Before and After and the poetry books Cora Fry and Cora Fry’s Pillow Book. And don’t just take my word for it. Her writing has won many awards and been praised by some of our best well-known writers, like Alice Munro, Joyce Carol Oates, Cynthia Ozick, Margaret Atwood, and John Updike.

I spoke to Rosellen Brown in her home in Hyde Park. We talked for so long, and so deeply, that we’re releasing our conversation in two parts. In part 1 of our interview, we discuss themes that run through Brown’s whole career, and how she uses form to approach difficult emotional and political subjects.

Next month in part 2, we will focus on her new novel, The Lake on Fire (Sarabande Books), her first book in 18 years. This is a major event by a major Chicago writer and we’re thrilled to have this opportunity to celebrate the work of Rosellen Brown.

You can check out books by Rosellen Brown here at the library, as part of our new Podcast Collection, which features books (and other media) from our past 3+ years of podcast guests.

We hope you enjoy our 35th episode! Each month we release an episode featuring a conversation with a notable guest, including authors, artists, and leaders from Deerfield, Chicagoland, and the world. Learn more about the podcast on our podcast page.

You can listen to all of our episodes in the player below or on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts. We welcome your comments and feedback—please send to podcast@deerfieldlibrary.org.
