Happy 2022! This year we will be making small changes to our music blog. First, from now on, this blog post series will be a collaboration between teen librarian, Mariel Fechik, and myself (Sam Rosen). We think that this collaboration will provide the community with a wider range of musical selections and different perspectives. Also, all of our musical recommendations will be available in our collection (either in our physical collection, Hoopla Digital, or both). We encourage everyone to explore our musical resources as they provide a wide selection of musical genres. Other than that, these monthly blog posts will be structured the same as they were in 2021. For each musical recommendation, we will include a link to the album and a sample song from that album. We hope you enjoy and discover some new artists!

If you feel so inclined, please email us at [email protected] with your own recommendation. We’d love to hear them!

Sam’s Picks:

ARTIST: Donna Missal

ALBUM TITLE: This Time

Missal is a powerful singer/songwriter with a voice that is very raspy and beautiful. I would classify her voice as soulful and pop. This whole album is amazing and worth checking out.

SONG TO CHECK OUT: Keep Lying

SIMILAR ARTISTS: Kailee Morgue, Bishop Briggs, Miya Folick

ARTIST: De Staat

ALBUM TITLE: I_CON

De Staat is a Dutch rock band that is equal parts gritty and catchy. They don’t follow a lot of formulaic techniques often found in songs, making the experimental elements of the band quite intoxicating.

SONG TO CHECK OUT: Get It Together

SIMILAR ARTISTS: Wolfmother, Black Keys, Black Honey

Mariel’s Picks:

ARTIST: Makaya McCraven

ALBUM TITLE: Deciphering the Message

Chicago drummer and “beat scientist” Makaya McCraven dug into the archives of Blue Note Records for this new project. Recruiting friends and peers in the jazz world, he connects past and present on this unique remix album.

SONG TO CHECK OUT: Autumn In New York

SIMILAR ARTISTS: Jeff Parker, Marquis Hill, Terrace Martin

ARTIST: Madison Cunningham

ALBUM TITLE: Who Are You Now

Madison Cunningham combines 70s stylings with her singular guitar playing and sweet voice to create a melding of indie rock/folk that is both familiar and new.

SONG TO CHECK OUT: Trouble Found Me

SIMILAR ARTISTS: Joni Mitchell, Becca Stevens, Aoife O’Donovan
