BrainHQ is your personal gym for brain training!

We’ve all heard that keeping your brain sharp may help delay the onset of memory loss and that crossword puzzles and sudoku are great ways to do that. However, the scientific evidence doesn’t totally support that. Crossword puzzles flex only one specific piece of cognition: the ability to find words or fluency. Crosswords might help you get better at word finding, but it doesn’t do anything to improve other brain functions. When you do a sudoku puzzle every day, your brain is simply getting more efficient at doing sudoku.

DPL is excited to offer a new online resource called BrainHQ, generously sponsored by the Friends of the Deerfield Public Library. BrainHQ offers exercises that are specifically designed to improve attention, speed, memory, and navigation. Created by a team of neuroscientists, psychologists, and medical doctors, BrainHQ exercises are based on numerous scientific studies of cognitive function.

You can find BrainHQ on our Online Resources page. You can play on any computer or download the app. Exercises are broken up into 2-minute bites, so you can train whenever you have a couple of minutes. The site tracks your progress and adjusts to your performance to constantly challenge you. Now you can play games and improve your brain health!

The acquisition of BrainHQ is one of the Library’s contributions to the Dementia Friendly Community initiative of West Deerfield Township.
