Do you need a book, or a movie, from the Deerfield Public Library right away, but are a patron of another library? Don’t sweat it! All you need to do is sign up as a reciprocal borrower!
But, what is a reciprocal borrower? Here at the Deerfield Public Library, we sign up reciprocal borrowers all the time! Reciprocal borrowers are patrons that have non-Deerfield library cards registered in the Deerfield Public Library’s system, so that they can check out items directly from DPL in person, or online.
To become a reciprocal borrower at the Deerfield Public Library, you will need:
1) A valid, current library card in good standing
2) A valid ID with your current address
When you arrive at the Deerfield Public Library, head right to the front information desk. A patron services staff member will ask for your home library card, and your ID. Next, he or she will phone your home library to make sure that you are in good standing. Finally, the patron services staff member will sign you up in the Deerfield Public Library’s system using your home library card. It’s that simple!
At the Deerfield Public Library, reciprocal borrower registration expires after one year, and must be renewed yearly with a current library card, and a valid ID. Reciprocal borrowers cannot place holds at the library. Reciprocal Borrowers have the same loan periods, fees, and fines as Deerfield Public Library card holders.

Deerfield patrons can do this at other libraries, too! Bring your valid, current Deerfield library card, and a valid ID with your current address to another library, and you, too, can sign up as a reciprocal borrower to directly check out items from them! Make sure to ask other libraries about their reciprocal borrower policies, so that you can always be in good standing!
