Real People, Real Stories: Helping the Court Case Dogs of Chicago

Hope. Love. Opportunity. Partnership. These are just a few of the many amazing things to come from the success of Safe Humane Chicago, an organization that connects youth, military veterans, and at-risk dogs with community volunteers in interactive, educational programming to create safer, more humane communities. The organization’s Court Case Dogs program, created in 2010, is the first of its kind in the nation.

Join Safe Humane Chicago at the Library on Tuesday, July 19 for A Ruff Road Home: The Court Case Dogs of Chicago to hear the story of this thriving program, the people who keep it going, and its widespread impact on the community. Register ahead to save your spot!

“The dogs did the time, but not the crime.”

– Cynthia Bathurst, co-founder of Safe Humane Chicago

Although Illinois has some of the toughest laws in the nation to protect against certain kinds of animal abuse, the dogs rescued from harmful situations were the ones paying the ultimate price. While trials lagged, these dogs sat in cages in the city shelter without any interaction with humans or other animals, many eventually being euthanized. That is, until the Court Case Dogs program came along with a plan to rehabilitate the animals and find them permanent homes.

Safe Humane’s team of volunteers, dog trainers, behavioral consultants, and partner organizations have been very successful in that mission.

There are so many great stories that have come from the Court Case Dogs program, including: the animals’ journeys from the shelters to loving homes; the heroes, rescue organizations, and volunteers that helped the dogs get a second chance at a great life; the partner programs that connect veterans, law enforcement personnel, and at-risk youth to these dogs; and, ultimately, the impact of the program on the Chicago community.

Cynthia Bathurst, co-founder of Safe Humane Chicago, will be here to share many of these stories. If you are an animal lover, this is an event you won’t want to miss!
