Are you one of the approximately 54% of Americans that report cooking more than before the pandemic? Hopefully, you have enjoyed the experience and plan on continuing this healthy activity.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. For Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10), the Deerfield Public Library has partnered with the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District to create a video highlighting the importance of fire safety in the kitchen.
Watch:
In the video, DBFPD Fire Marshal Brian McCarthy shares safety tips to keep you from having a cooking fire. This includes:
- Never leave cooking food unattended. If you have to leave the room, even for a short time, turn on the timer for a reminder.
- Always have pot lids close by. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan, turn off the burner, and leave the pan covered.
- Avoid wearing loose clothing.
- Have a kid-free zone of at least three feet around the stove.
Also, smoke alarms detect and alert people to a fire in the early stages. Smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death in a fire. It is recommended you test your alarms at least once a month to ensure they are working properly.
In search of a new recipe or two? The Library has hundreds of cookbooks, in print and digital formats. Bon appétit!
