When I was a kid, the library was my gateway to the world. I loved stories that transported me to other places, times, and worlds. From The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 to The Chronicles of Narnia to The Mixed Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, I devoured (and still do) historical fiction, fantasy, international stories, and mystery books. They gave me a glimpse into lives I would never live and fantastical places I could never go.
As author Patrick Rothfuss said, “Books are uniquely suited to showing you the inside of another person’s head. That is the root of empathy. That’s the first step to understanding you’re not alone in the world.” Reading books that feature characters who don’t look or live like you teaches you about others, the world around you, and yourself. There is always more to explore, so grab a book and travel the world!
