Classics Book Discussion: Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley

Travels with Charley 1Many of us have memories of summer road trips–even if we haven’t been on one! The romance of the open road is deeply embedded in our culture. The road trip itself is, in many ways, an American institution.

In 1960, the novelist John Steinbeck, by then himself an American institution, got in his camper with his dog Charley and set out for a month-long trip across the country he famously depicted in his novels. The result is the classic travelogue, Travels with Charley.

Long-beloved for Steinbeck’s fun, chatty, and prescient impressions of a rapidly changing country, Travels with Charley has also been fiercely debated as questions about the authenticity of Steinbeck’s story have emerged.

Discuss this Steinbeck classic with us

Join us Thursday, July 26, 7-8 p.m. for the third in our Classics Book Discussion series to discuss this modern classic of travel writing. Books are available for checkout on the Library’s holds shelf.

Our Classics Book Discussion series meets every quarter to discuss a book you were (supposed!) to read in school or a forgotten classic. Travels with Charley also counts towards the July challenge of our adult reading program, Read Without Boundaries.
