Fine Free is finally here! Effective December 1, 2020, Deerfield Public Library will no longer collect overdue fines.
For the past two years, Library staff has researched the pros and cons of overdue fines, including potential usage barriers, efficiencies, and the Library’s bottom line. A first step in this direction was the launch of automatic renewals, which decreased our overdue fine collection.
Fine free doesn’t mean free though. We still want to make sure our materials are available for everyone to use and enjoy. Listed below is the timetable of notices we send out to ensure we are collecting our materials.
2 days before due: Courtesy notice will be received (email and text only).
2 days overdue: Notice sent.
7 days overdue: Notice sent.
14 days overdue: Notice sent.
21 days overdue: Notice sent and card is blocked. Until items are returned, patron will be unable to place holds, check out any materials, including the digital collection, or use the MakerSpace.
28 days overdue: Billing Notice sent for the full replacement cost of item(s).
I’m confident that Deerfield Public Library patrons are going to love the new Fine Free era. Passage of this new policy by our Board of Trustees will further support the Library’s commitment to open access.
