In the latest episode of the Deerfield Public Library Podcast, we had the pleasure of talking to cartoonist and author Jeffrey Brown.
Brown is probably best known for the bestselling Darth Vader & Son and its sequels as well as the Jedi Academy series of middle-grade graphic novels. Brown is also known for his sensitive graphic memoirs for adults like Clumsy, Funny Misshapen Body, and A Matter of Life, among others. Most recently, he’s been working on another middle-grade series called Lucy & Andy Neanderthal.
There’s lots of other Jeffrey Brown projects like the Incredible Change-Bots, his cat books, and more! You can find out more about Brown on his website or you can check out some of his books here at the library.
Aside from our love of his work, we invited Brown to our show because of an interesting Deerfield connection. He’s never lived in Deerfield, but our town is in every one of his books, and some of them even depict downtown Deerfield! In this episode, we reveal the mystery behind his local connection and discuss some of the themes in his adult memoirs. Brown tells us how his Star Wars books came about, why it’s hard to make jokes about R2-D2 and C-3PO, and how he gets all the science into the Lucy & Andy Neanderthal books. He also gives his recommendation for the recent graphic novel My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris.
In our library news segment, we highlight our new, year-long adult reading program, Read Without Boundaries. You can find more information on how to sign up here.
We hope you enjoy our thirteenth episode! Each month we’ll be releasing an episode featuring a conversation with a dynamic Deerfield leader. Learn more about the podcast on our podcast page.
