Library Circulation: Your Questions Answered!

askme-button-Library-outlined

Are you new to the Deerfield area? Are you visiting us from a neighboring community? Do you have an aging Deerfield Library card in your wallet? Everyone, from the newest card-holder to the most seasoned library user, has questions about our circulation policies from time to time; and we want you to know that we are here to help. We have heard your questions, and without further ado…some of your most burning DPL circulation questions answered!

How do I get a Deerfield Library card?

Deerfield residents can obtain a library card upon display of a valid government-issued photo ID and proof of their current address within incorporated Deerfield. Residents of Riverwoods, Bannockburn, and unincorporated Deerfield are not taxed for library services, but may choose to purchase library cards. Purchased card-holders are entitled to the same services as taxed card-holders.

How often do library cards expire and how do I renew my card once it has?

Library accounts for Deerfield residents expire every three years. In order to renew your account we need to verify that you are still a Deerfield resident and update your contact information. To update your library card, visit the information desk with a valid government-issued photo ID and proof of your current address within incorporated Deerfield.

Library accounts for reciprocal borrowers expire every year. In order to renew your account here, we will need to verify that your home library account is still in good standing. To update your library account with us, please bring in your home library card, along with a valid government-issued photo ID, and proof of your current address.

How can I pick up an item I put on hold?

If you have been notified that an item you put on hold is ready for pickup, you should be able to find it on the hold shelf, sorted alphabetically by your last name. The hold shelf is on the main floor, just opposite the self-checkout stations, and items on hold are generally held for three (3) days. It is important to remember that when you put an item on hold, it becomes “attached” to your account, and therefore can only be checked out on your account. This is to ensure that no one else is able to checkout an item that has been specifically reserved for you. If you will be sending someone else to pick up an item on hold for you, please ensure that they bring YOUR library card.

If I have forgotten my library card, can I still checkout materials?

Yes! If you have a current library card in good standing, you can checkout materials by using a valid government-issued photo ID Visit the information desk for assistance.

How can I access my account from home?

For your convenience, we offer multiple ways to access your library account without having to leave the comforts of home. Your account information can be obtained by clicking on “My Account” in the upper-right corner of our homepage (or by clicking here). By accessing your online account, you can search for and place holds on items, view and renew materials currently checked-out, and even rate and review items. We also have a mobile app that allows you unlimited access to your account from your mobile device.

As always, please feel free to contact us for any questions you may have with regard to your account, or library services in general. We hope to see you soon!
