Local History

We aim to preserve materials that document the history of Deerfield and the surrounding areas, including Bannockburn and Riverwoods as well as Lake County in general.

Our collection contains both print and electronic resources, including Deerfield High School yearbooks, Deerfield telephone directories, published books related to Deerfield history, unpublished manuscripts, the Deerfield Review archives, and primary source materials.

You can access our digitized resources online through the Deerfield Public Library Local History Archives. New Local History documents are being added all the time!

To access print materials, come into the library and we can get you set up. If you are interested in donating materials to the local history archive, please contact Anne Jamieson at deerfieldhistory@deerfieldlibrary.org to get started!

Historical cemetery tour

The Library, in cooperation with the Deerfield Cemetery Commission, is pleased to present “inside the gates” historical tours of the Deerfield Cemetery. Due to the popularity of this program, the Library created an audio tour[1] that you can use to take a self-guided tour of the cemetery.

Below you will find the Cemetery Tour route, as well as the audio guide. Allow approximately one (1) hour to complete the tour, and please remember to observe the following guidelines:

  • The cemetery closes at sundown, so please plan accordingly and make sure if you start the tour in the evening, you have enough time to complete it.
  • Do not take the tour at night.
  • Watch your step. There are gravestones flush with the ground, so please be careful where you walk.
  • Do not lean on the gravestones.
  • Be respectful – the persons buried in the cemetery do have living relatives who visit their graves.

Deerfield train station

The historic Deerfield Road Train Station is the only building in Deerfield on the National Register of Historic Places. But that only came about through the vigorous advocacy of the Deerfield Area Historical Society. Did you know the station made a brief appearance in the movie, Risky Business? Do you know the reason for the station’s “No Kissing” sign? Access our tour guide to find out about the building and the engaging history.
