Day 27: Observation Car by Lauren Clark

Queer Poem-a-Day is a program from the Adult Services Department at the Library and may include adult language.

Observation Car

by Lauren Clark

There is no point in returning to sleep
as everything has already passed before my eyes.

The time between the blue glow beyond the hills
and the sudden flesh pink that replaces it:
there must have been colors between.

Always the sense that someone is standing
just out of sight, who will point out the hints and sights

as they pass too fast by the window, the glass
always between seeing and touching.
I have been sitting on this train

watching for the sun
and here it rises across the great lake.

There is not someone else
who knows all the words to the song
to which I know all the words.

2021 Queer Poem a Day

Queer Poem-a-Day is directed by poet and teacher Lisa Hiton and Dylan Zavagno, Adult Services Coordinator at the Deerfield Public Library. Music for this second year of our series is the first movement, Schéhérazade, from Masques, Op. 34, by Karol Szymanowski, performed by pianist Daniel Baer. Queer Poem-a-Day is supported by generous donations from the Friends of the Deerfield Public Library and the Deerfield Fine Arts Commission.
