I’ve always loved reading. But it took a while for me to want to read chapter books. I loved the feeling of finishing a story, and I didn’t want to take the time to read a longer book (even though they were worth more reading points in my class). But in third grade, this changed after I didn’t complete my monthly reading goal, and I missed out on a pencil sharpener that other kids got. I
promised myself after that I would read whatever it took to get those prizes. Now, I read all kinds of books for the fun of it (but I still love participating in summer reading programs)!
I kept my love of reading shorter books, like picture books. I’ve been doing storytime for a couple of years now, and I love finding new titles to share with a group of kids to explore new ideas and topics together. I also love funny and heartfelt comics. The artwork is beautiful and truly makes the stories come to life. Realistic fiction is one of my favorite genres. Nothing compares to the feeling of finding a character who you relate to, of seeing aspects of your life reflected back. And yet, realistic fiction also provides an opportunity to see the world through someone else’s eyes. I love learning about the world from different people’s real-life experiences. Because of this, I’m a huge fan of memoirs and biographies, particularly those for teens.
Reading allows us to open our hearts and minds, but having fun and reading what you enjoy truly makes the experience worthwhile!
