Summer volunteer opportunities for teens at DPL

Do you love the Library? Do you want to be a mentor for younger kids? Do you need community service hours? Stop by the Library anytime after April 1 to pick up an application and return it by 9 p.m. on Monday, May 6! Teens going into 7th grade through the age of 17 are welcome to apply.

You have the opportunity to be a mentor to younger children and share their excitement in reading. Volunteering at the Library is also an awesome opportunity for first-time job experience. You’ll gain experience in filling out a detailed application, choosing references, planning a work schedule for yourself, and working in 2-hour shifts with a teammate or by yourself. You’ll be responsible for being on time for shifts and organizing all of the materials needed for our Summer Reading Program. Use our volunteering opportunity as the chance to test out the waters and gain job experience!

S*T*A*R* Volunteer

As a S*T*A*R* Volunteer you will be responsible for the Youth Services’ Summer Reading Program sign-up table, where you will assist younger patrons with registering for the 3-month long reading program, organize sign up/completion sheets, and hand out prizes. You would also have the opportunity to work side by side with Youth Librarians at individual children’s programs at the Library.

Print out an application and return it to the Youth Services desk with a parent/guardian’s signature by May 6!

Book Buddy Program

As a Big Buddy for the Book Buddy Program,  you will meet with your Little Buddy readers for 45 minutes weekly to read aloud together, talk about the stories, and share fun activities.  It’s a fantastic opportunity to create a relationship with a younger reader and encourage the love of literacy!

Program Volunteer

You can also volunteer throughout the entire year as a Program Volunteer. Fill out an application today and we’ll keep your info on file so we can contact you when we need help with individual Youth programs throughout the school year and the summer. If you’re looking for a lot of flexibility in your volunteer schedule and want to experience a variety of ways to help out, this is your best fit!
