The ‘Art’ of Programming

There are as many reasons why people love art as there are books in a library. To many, art is a form of communication that to some feeds the senses and others is a form of self-expression and interpretation. Whatever the reason, the Library’s art programs are some of the most well-received adult programs we offer, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Our goal at the Library is to offer adult art programs which are both wide and varied. To date, we’ve had everything from craft projects and photography to painting restoration (remember conservator Faye Wrubel from the Art Institute?) and even an illusionist! This fall we’ll be dipping our toe into a different area of the art world by offering two NEW programs in art education.

outsider-artThe first program, Intuitive and Outsider Art on Thursday, October 6, 7:00-8:00 p.m., was brought to our attention by the Deerfield Fine Arts Commission. Presenter Bill Swislow, from Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, will introduce us to works of art by people with no formal training but who are often touched with creative genius. While this artwork may not be as well-known as the masterpieces found at the Chicago Art Institute, it’s steadily gaining acceptance by even the most conservative in the art world.  Click here to register.

rockwellphotoIf art history is your bag, the second program, Appreciating the Art of Norman Rockwell on Thursday, November 3, 7:00-8:00 p.m., includes a fascinating look at one of America’s most popular painters during his life. First-time presenter and art historian, Jeff Mishur, will share with us the development of Rockwell’s career from his time at The Post to when he began illustrating for Look and Life magazines. Click here to register.

Whether you’re a regular at our art programs or are considering attending one for the first time, we’re sure you’ll enjoy these two new offerings!
