Through the Lens of Art Shay, April 13

Through the Lens of Art Shay | Saturday, April 13, 2-3 p.m.

As part of our Fight to Integrate Deerfield: 60 Year Reflection series, the Library has been celebrating the life and legacy of one of our most distinguished residents, photographer Art Shay. One of the things I love about Shay’s work is that it connects our Chicago suburb to the wide world of actors, politicians, sports stars, and writers that he photographed over the years. But Shay also left behind an invaluable documentary and artistic record of Deerfield. Starting in 1959, he captured the many protests, community meetings, and speeches that were part of the local fight over integrated housing.

Join us on Saturday, April 13, 2-3 p.m., to hear Professor Erik Gellman present from his forthcoming book Troublemakers: Chicago Freedom Struggles through the Lens of Art Shay. Gellman’s book, due out this fall, draws on hundreds of Shay’s photographs and features a whole chapter on Deerfield. In this special program, you’ll view previously unseen photographs and hear unique stories from his research and interviews with Art. You can register for “Through the Lens of Art Shay” here.

We also invite you to stop by the Library any time to view our new, stunning Shay photographs of Deerfield’s history. Special thanks again to the Friends of the Deerfield Public Library and the Art Shay Archives for making these exhibits possible.
